Greece is the Word! – and the place to be

Now that I have that song stuck in your head, you're very welcome! Allow me to take you on a journey as I ticked one destination off my bucket list and want to share it with you. This spring, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos, accompanied by some wonderful friends I met in Italy on a tour last year. And of course, Flat Joey was there too, adding an extra special touch to our adventures. So, let me give you a little taste of my experience in this enchanting part of the world.

Greece, a treasure trove of ancient stories, mouthwatering flavors, and breathtaking views, beckoned us to embark on the ultimate vacation experience. Our first stop was Athens, where we found ourselves wandering amidst the awe-inspiring Acropolis. The remnants of the glorious past seemed to come alive before our eyes, transporting us to a time of grandeur and majesty. The warmth of the sun embraced us as we stood in awe of the enchanting beauty of Santorini. Each sunset painted the sky in a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of colors, leaving us breathless and reaching for our cameras to capture these magical moments for eternity.

But let me tell you, amidst the historical wonders and captivating landscapes, it was the Greek cuisine that truly stole the show. Imagine sinking your teeth into a juicy gyro, the tender meat, tangy tzatziki, and crispy veggies nestled within a warm pita, creating a mouthwatering symphony of flavors. And when it comes to desserts, Greek pastries transported our taste buds to dessert heaven. The flaky layers of baklava, the sweet indulgence of loukoumades drizzled with honey, and the buttery almond perfection of kourabiedes were tantalizing delights that had us begging for more.

Greece is not just about history and food; it's a place where vibrant culture and laid-back island vibes intertwine effortlessly. We let the rhythm of traditional Greek music seep into our bones, as the melodies of the bouzouki coax our hips to sway. We joined in on lively Greek dances and fully embraced the Mediterranean joie de vivre that filled the air.

Our journey began in Athens, where we explored a little and treated ourselves to a great lunch. We opted for a Greek salad with Pita bread, and let me tell you, a Greek salad in Greece is nothing like one in the United States. The fresh ingredients and the artful combination of flavors created a culinary masterpiece that delighted our palates. The next day, we embarked on a private food tour in Athens, a highlight of our time in Greece. Our guide Yanni took us to establishments he had been visiting since he was a boy, each one a culinary gem. We sampled everything from loukoumades to feta cheese, gyros to souvlaki, Greek meats to Greek coffee, and, of course, baklava. It was a gastronomic adventure that left us with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

During our delightful time in Athens, we joined our tour group and embarked on our Greek adventure. Our first full day of the tour took us on a journey through Athens, where we marveled at the mighty Acropolis and explored the vibrant area of Plaka. The streets were lined with cozy cafes, local shops, and traditional tavernas, enticing us to indulge in delicious Greek cuisine. And indulge we did, enjoying authentic dishes that captured the essence of Greece. Plaka, rich in history, offered us the chance to explore ancient landmarks such as the Ancient Agora, a marketplace dating back to the 6th century BC. We wandered among the ruins, imagining the hustle and bustle of ancient Greek life.

From Athens, we set sail for the picturesque island paradise of Santorini, renowned for its stunning beauty and unique architecture. As we arrived, we were instantly captivated by the iconic white-washed buildings with blue-domed rooftops perched on cliff edges. The breathtaking views of the sapphire blue sea from these picturesque structures were truly unforgettable. Santorini, in all its volcanic caldera glory, served as the backdrop for our adventures. And what adventures they were!

We walked along the mesmerizing black beach, a natural wonder that sets Santorini apart from other beach destinations. The jet-black sand created a striking contrast against the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, making it a truly remarkable sight to behold. We also explored the ancient city of Akrotiri, a well-preserved archaeological site that was once buried under volcanic ash. The history and stories that unfolded before our eyes were awe-inspiring.

Of course, we couldn't miss the shopping opportunities Santorini had to offer. The array of unique and charming boutiques allowed us to discover treasures and take a piece of Santorini's beauty home with us. And let's not forget the gastronomic delights that awaited us. We savored the regional delicacies such as fresh seafood, traditional Greek cuisine, and local specialties like fava, cherry tomatoes, and the famous Santorinian wine. Each bite was a celebration of flavors that transported us to a paradisiacal realm of taste and pleasure.

After bidding a fond farewell to Santorini, our journey led us to the vibrant and glamorous island of Mykonos, made famous by Jackie O and Aristotle Onassis. Nestled in the heart of the Cyclades, Mykonos exudes a cosmopolitan atmosphere and is famous for its stunning beaches. As we arrived, we were greeted by the charming white-washed buildings, narrow streets, and energetic nightlife that the island is renowned for. The iconic windmills stood proudly, overlooking Mykonos Town, adding to the island's allure.

Beyond its renowned party atmosphere, Mykonos is a haven for beach lovers, boasting some of the most exquisite shores in Greece. While I didn't partake in the late-night revelries, I discovered that Mykonos offers a beach to suit every taste. During our time on the island, we had the pleasure of spending a day at Super Paradise Beach, where we were treated like royalty. The beach truly lived up to its name, offering crystal-clear turquoise waters that beckoned us to dive in, golden sands that invited us to soak up the sun, and a plethora of beachside amenities that ensured our comfort and relaxation. Whether you're seeking a tranquil spot to unwind, engage in water sports, or simply bask in the natural splendor, Mykonos exudes an unparalleled charm that makes it a true paradise for sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts alike.

One standout moment during our stay in Mykonos was undoubtedly the breathtaking sunset cruise we embarked on. While Santorini may be famous for its sunsets, Mykonos certainly held its own in this category. As we glided along the coastline, the vibrant colors of Mykonos transformed before our eyes. The whitewashed buildings perched on the hillsides seemed to glow with an ethereal radiance, a picturesque scene straight out of a postcard. The contrast of the azure sea against the vibrant pink and orange hues painted across the sky was nothing short of magical. We were left in awe and with a deep appreciation for the beauty that surrounded us.

And, of course, one of the true delights of our time in Mykonos was the opportunity to indulge in the island's local restaurants by the sea. Dining in Mykonos is not just about the food—it's an experience that engages all the senses. The menu was a treasure trove of culinary delights, reflecting the authentic flavors and traditions of Greece. We started our culinary journey with the freshest seafood imaginable. Each dish showcased the epitome of ocean-to-table dining, with succulent grilled octopus that practically melted in our mouths, juicy prawns bursting with flavor, and sweet scallops served in their shells, leaving our taste buds yearning for more.

In Mykonos, we discovered that every twist and turn through the charming streets led to new surprises. From the bustling Matogianni Street, filled with designer boutiques and local shops, to the romantic and picturesque Little Venice area, complete with its colorful bougainvillea-filled alleyways, there was always something to discover.

As our unforgettable journey through Greece came to an end, we found ourselves filled with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for the experiences we had shared. The memories we made will be forever etched in our hearts, reminding us of the beauty, the flavors, and the wonders of this incredible country.
