Solo travel is a great way to explore the world and find yourself!

People often ask me how one can travel alone without feeling lonely, scared, or nervous. As a single traveler, I’m here to share my insights and tips to make your solo travel experience enjoyable and safe. With the right attitude, open mind, and preparation, solo travel can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

Here are a few of my top tips for making the most of your travels when you’re on your own.

Do your research: Before embarking on your solo travel, research your destination thoroughly. This includes information about the local culture, customs, and laws. You should also research the areas that you plan to visit and stay in, and ensure that they are safe for solo travelers. I always make sure my hotel has restaurants close so I can limit how far I will be walking alone at night.

Stay connected: It is important to stay connected with family and friends back home. You can do this by sharing your itinerary and checking in with them regularly. You can also consider purchasing a local SIM card or a pocket Wi-Fi device to stay connected to the internet while you travel. I always check in daily with someone back home.

Trust your instincts: Always trust your instincts and follow your gut feeling. If something doesn’t feel right or makes you uncomfortable, don’t do it. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Keep your belongings safe: Keep your valuables such as passports, cash, and credit cards safe. Consider purchasing a secure travel wallet or a money belt. Also, be aware of your surroundings and avoid carrying valuable items in crowded areas.

Make friends: Solo travel does not have to be lonely. You can make friends by joining group tours or participating in local events. The last time I went to Rome, I had a great meal with 2 strangers from Belgium.

Be flexible: Traveling alone gives you the opportunity to change your plans and be flexible. Take advantage of this freedom and explore new places and activities. I love the fact that I don’t have to answer to anyone about what I want to do.

Have a  plan:  This may contradict #6, but have your tours set and even some dining plans set up in advance.  This will ensure that you get to see and do what you want to and you won’t be wandering around aimlessly.

Join a Group: If you are worried about being on your own the entire time, consider joining a tour group.  This gives you the comfort of being with people. Plus you get the benefit of making new friends.  I took a tour last year by myself and this year, some of us are going to Greece together.

Solo travel can be an incredibly rewarding and life-changing experience. Be open to new experiences and don’t be afraid to take risks. Don’t be afraid to talk to locals and explore the city. You never know what amazing experiences you may find! With a bit of preparation and the right attitude, you can have an amazing and safe solo travel experience!
